The Costa Mesa Police Department today announced a DUI checkpoint here in Orange County, scheduled for November 22, 2008. The Daily Pilot put up a story about the checkpoint in their newspaper also.
Here are the details:
Costa Mesa police will conduct a DUI and driver’s license checkpoint Saturday on Newport Boulevard.
From 8 p.m. to 2 a.m., police will have a checkpoint for northbound traffic on Newport Boulevard and Flower Street, police said.
So far this year, Costa Mesa police have arrested more than any other agency in Orange County — more than 830 suspected drunken drivers. (Last year, Costa Mesa Police alone were responsible for over 2/3 of all Orange County DUI Arrests). Showing how political this whole process is, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), will have volunteers, and a crashed car trailer on hand to give drivers a visual reminder of the dangers of driving drunk.
Funding for the checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety. As I have mentioned in other posts, DUI checkpoints are not nearly as effective as patrol cars looking for specific driving patterns from motorists. However, they get funding, and they give MADD volunteers something to do, and to raise money for.

The Huntington Beach Police Department announced the following — The Huntington Beach Police Department is set to commence a year-long anti-DUI program aimed at preventing deaths and injuries on our roadways. New enforcement measures to combat impaired driving are coming as a result of a recent $181,077 grant awarded by the Office of Traffic Safety to the City of Huntington Beach. The special DUI Enforcement and Awareness grant is to assist in efforts to reduce the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol and other drug related collisions. The grant activities will specifically target impaired driving offenders as well as educate the public on the dangers of impaired driving. This will be done through the use of DUI/driver’s license checkpoints, warrant services and stakeouts for repeat DUI offenders, saturation patrols, and court stings where DUI offenders with suspended or revoked driver licenses get behind the wheel after leaving court. Funding for the grant comes from the California Office Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. If you have a need for an Orange County DUI Attorney, call Robert Miller at 714-568-1560.

From the Daily Pilot newspaper, a story about a DUI case dismissed: A 48-year-old Newport-Mesa sports coach and Costa Mesa resident arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence last month will not be charged, prosecutors said Tuesday. Laurence Draluck, 48, the Newport Harbor High School girls’ soccer coach, was arrested Oct. 6 in Costa Mesa on his way home from Los Angeles when police pulled him over and eventually arrested him on suspicion of DUI, he said. Prosecutors declined to elaborate on why they did not choose to charge him, only saying there was a lack of evidence. Prosecutors legally have up to a year from Draluck’s arrest to charge him, but said unless anything new turns up in the case, that is highly unlikely. If you have a need for an Orange County DUI Attorney, call Robert Miller at 714-568-1560.

From the Daily Pilot newspaper, the following story: Costa Mesa police are set to begin a yearlong DUI program that will crack down on drunk drivers and educate the public to the dangers of drinking and driving, officials announced Tuesday.
Thanks to a $300,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, Costa Mesa police have funding for another year of increased DUI checkpoints, saturation patrols and sting operations.
The money will go to conducting warrant searches and stakeouts for repeat DUI offenders and stakeouts outside of local courts to see if people convicted of a DUI and prohibited from driving are in fact, following the law, official said.
The department received a similar grant last year that funded more than half a dozen DUI checkpoints. If you have a need for an Orange County DUI Attorney, call Robert Miller at 714-568-1560 .
