Costa Mesa DUI Checkpoint February 20, 2009

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

From the Orange County Register:

Drivers who are drinking tonight better beware.

There will be increased DUI enforcement in Costa Mesa, San Juan Capistrano, San Clemente and Dana point.

Divers headed northbound on Newport Boulevard in Costa Mesa at Flower Street may get stopped by the police tonight.

The police department will hold a sobriety and driver’s license checkpoint from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. at the intersection of Newport Boulevard and Flower Street to inform the public about drunken driving and driving without a license.

“We have been committed to saving lives by aggressively seeking out and removing impaired drivers from the roadways of Costa Mesa for nearly three decades,” said Traffic Safety Bureau Sgt. Rob Sharpnack.

In South Orange County, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department will send roving patrol cars through Dana Point, San Juan Capistrano and San Clemente tonight in search of drunken drivers.

The officers will target areas where drunken drivers have been caught in the past.  If you have questions for an Orange County DUI Attorney, call me at 714-568-1560.

TMZ reports that they have learned Gary Collins — the former Miss America host and talk show host, has been arrested yet again for DUI.

Law enforcement tells TMZ Collins was busted at 9:16 last night by the CHP just south of Montecito, on suspicion of DUI. Law enforcement sources tell us Collins refused a field sobriety test but was subsequently given a blood alcohol test.

Collins — former host of “Hour Magazine” and “The Home Show” — was taken to the Santa Barbara County Jail where he was booked and released.

A year ago Collins pled no contest to DUI in an accident that resulted in the death of the other driver. Collins was not prosecuted for manslaughter, in part because the other driver caused the crash by making an illegal left. Collins is currently on 4 years probation. If he was driving drunk again, he’ll almost certainly go to jail.

Back in 2002, Collins was found not guilty of DUI in Mississippi.

It’s a good thing to see that the CHP can make flip remarks about the superbowl.  Today, Superbowl Sunday (how ’bout them Steelers?), the CHP had the following press release:

Law enforcement officers around Southern California will be on the lookout for drunk drivers on Super Bowl Sunday.

“We’re not discouraging the celebration,” California Highway Patrol Commissioner Joe Farrow said. “We’re asking fans to make the right call, so they won’t find themselves in a jail cell.”

The CHP and local law enforcement organizations will deploy extra DUI patrols, and Farrow encouraged people to call 911 if they see anyone driving drunk.

Last year on Super Bowl Sunday, 12 people were killed and 167 others were injured in alcohol-related traffic accidents statewide, and CHP officers arrested 403 motorists for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

“A DUI is no five-yard penalty,” Farrow said. “It’s something that will follow you around for years to come.”

Farrow urged people to use a designated driver, wear their safety belts and comply with speed laws.
