California Highway Patrol officers will be looking for impaired drivers on St. Patrick’s Day, CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow said in a news released issued by the department.
“We want people to enjoy themselves and have a good time, but safety on the roadways is everyone’s responsibility,” Farrow said. “If you are going to be drinking make sure you have a designated driver who will not be consuming alcohol to get you home safely,” he said.
According to the CHP, the number of people killed in alcohol-involved statewide collisions in California has risen from 1,233 in 2000 to 1,489 in 2007. On St. Patrick’s Day last year 50 people were injured in 110 alcohol-involved collisions statewide.
The Coachella Police Department will conduct a DUI/Drivers License checkpoint from 7 p.m. Friday through 2 a.m. Saturday.
“In an effort to reduce the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol involved crashes, DUI checkpoints are conducted to identify offenders and get them off the street as well as educate the public on the dangers of impaired driving,” police said in a news release.
Traffic volume and weather permitting, all vehicles may be checked and drivers who are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs will be arrested.
“Our objective is to send a clear message to those who are considering driving a motor vehicle after consuming alcohol and/or drugs – Drunk Driving, Over the Limit, Under Arrest,” the news release said.
CHP and police encourage the public to help keep roadways safe by calling 911 if they see a suspected impaired driver.

Actually, not DUI Checkpoints, but DUI Saturation Patrols, will be patrolling all over Orange County, a participating county in the “AVOID Anti-DUI” program. A Saturation Patrol is where teams of officers specifically patrol looking for DUI drivers. Saturation patrols are generally more effective than DUI checkpoints.

San Diego, CA – San Diego County Law Enforcement is urging the public to help keep the streets safe this St. Patrick’s Day by drinking responsibly and designating a sober driver before heading to a local celebration or pub.
Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that over the past five years, 851 people lost their lives in motor vehicles crashes during the St. Patrick’s Day holiday. In 2007, alcohol attributed to 1,489 deaths in California with 30,641 injured, many still suffering with life long disabilities
San Diego County Law Enforcement Agencies will be sending special DUI saturation patrols out Tuesday night to stop and arrest those who drink and drive.
“St. Patrick’s Day is supposed to be a time to celebrate Irish heritage and gather with friends, but it can quickly end in tragedy due to impaired driving,†said Sheriff Bill Kolender. “If you plan on drinking, don’t rely on luck to keep you safe or to keep you out of trouble. Be responsible and take appropriate precautions.â€Â
Sheriff Kolender recommends the following tips:
• Plan a safe way home before your celebrations begin
• If you plan to get a ride home with someone else, designate a sober driver before any drinking begins
• If you’re impaired, use a taxi, call a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation so you are sure to get home safely
• If you happen to see a drunk driver on the road, don’t hesitate – Call 9-1-1
• If you know someone who is about to drive their car or ride their motorcycle while impaired, take their keys and help them make other arrangements to get to where they are going safely
“Driving impaired or riding with someone who is impaired is an extremely risky and dangerous thing to do,†said Christopher J. Murphy, Director of the California Office of Traffic Safety. “If you plan on using alcohol, plan ahead with a sober driver. And remember, friends don’t let friends drive drunk.â€Â

L.B.P.D. DUI Saturation Patrol Proves Effective
On March 13, 2009, the Long Beach Police Department’s Traffic Enforcement Section conducted a DUI Saturation Patrol throughout Long Beach from 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. the following morning. During the eight-hour operation, eight additional police officers patrolled the City looking for impaired drivers.
During the operation five people were arrested for DUI, six vehicles were towed, one person was arrested for an outstanding felony warrant, one person was arrested for an outstanding misdemeanor warrant, and 68 drivers were issued traffic citations.
DUI Saturation Patrols are a vital component in the fight against impaired drivers. Nationally, impaired driving caused by alcohol and/or drugs causes one death every 30 minutes, and the average American has a 30% chance of being killed or injured by an impaired driver. Saturation patrols have been proven to reduce impaired driving-related collisions by removing these drivers from our streets.
Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. “When more people drive sober and safely, lives are saved. It’s just that simple,†said Christopher J. Murphy, Director of the Office of Traffic Safety. “This grant will help make Long Beach just that much safer of a place to live and work.â€Â

By the way, as a Long Beach DUI Lawyer, I can tell you that saturation patrols, from the law enforcement perspective, is greatly more effective than Long Beach DUI Checkpoints.

Warrant stems from 2007 California DUI case.
The Beverly Hills Police Department has issued a warrant for Lindsey Lohan’s arrest. The cause for the issuance has not been revealed though it is believed to be in response to a violation of the terms of her probation from a 2007 DUI in Los Angeles. In that incident, Lohan lost control of her Mercedes SL65 and crashed into some shrubs, following a night of partying. Cocaine was also found in the vehicle.
Following the California drunk driving episode in 2007, the starlet was sentenced to three years probation and spent 24 hours in jail. She had also been attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.
While they admit that they are not actively looking for the 22-year Lohan, police hope to resolve the issue in the coming week, possibly negotiating a voluntary surrender.
A hearing has been scheduled for today at the Beverly Hills Superior Court, though the actress is not expected to appear. Lohan’s CA DUI defense lawyer insists that she has been in compliance with the terms of her probation and calls the warrant the result of a misunderstanding.
