Costa Mesa DUI Checkpoint set for June 2, 2009

Friday, May 29th, 2009

The Orange County Register shows the following list of Checkpoints for Memorial Day weekend in Orange County.  Here’s a list of  selected checkpoints:

•Newport Beach – 9 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Saturday at northbound Dover and 16th streets.

•Costa Mesa – 8 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. Saturday at northbound Harbor Boulevard at Fair Drive.

•Brea – 8 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday. Brea police did not disclose the location.

•La Habra – 9 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. Saturday at La Habra Boulevard and Euclid Street.

“Memorial Day travel by Southern Californians is expected to drop by 2.3 percent to just over 2.5 million trips this year – yet another sign of the harsh economic times, travel experts say.

As more people are expected to stay in town, local police are gearing up to combat drinking and driving on local roads.

Anaheim police Sgt. Rick Martinez, who coordinates DUI enforcement efforts in the county, said that while it’s difficult to quantify, “it seems that people are inclined to stay closer to home, go to people’s homes or establishments, and get behind the wheel after they’ve been drinking.”

Police departments throughout the county will be mounting sobriety patrols, as they routinely do for holiday weekends.

If you plan on sticking around for local festivities, make sure to have a designated driver. Driving under the influence checkpoints will be held in cities including Newport Beach, Lake Forest, Costa Mesa, Brea, and La Habra, police say.

Here’s a list of a selected checkpoints:

•Newport Beach – 9 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Saturday at northbound Dover and 16th streets.

•Costa Mesa – 8 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. Saturday at northbound Harbor Boulevard at Fair Drive.

•Brea – 8 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday. Brea police did not disclose the location.

•La Habra – 9 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. Saturday at La Habra Boulevard and Euclid Street.

While Southern Californians are planning fewer out-of-town trips this year, that’s not the case nationwide.

Nationally, travel this weekend is projected to increase slightly – by 1.5 percent, a trend that reflects a significant drop in gas prices compared to 2008 when the cost for fuel was at an all-time high, nearing $4 a gallon.

Just over 2 million local travelers will drive to their destinations, about a 2.1 percent decrease from the previous year, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California.

Travel by air by local folks is expected to drop even more significantly – by nearly 6 percent to 213,000 Southern Californians.

“The economic downturn is affecting California more acutely than many other parts of the country, and the state’s double-digit unemployment has without a doubt pushed down the number of holiday travelers,” says Jeffrey Spring, a spokesman for the Auto Club.

For all you road trippers, keep in mind that gas prices throughout the state continue to rise in anticipation of a spike in car travel during the summer months.

As of Thursday, the average cost for a gallon of regular in Orange County was $2.57 – a 5 cent jump from Monday and up by a quarter from a month ago.

Top local travel destinations remain the same as for most other holidays: Las Vegas, San Diego, San Francisco, Arizona and California’s Central Coast between Santa Barbara and Monterey.

Friday and Monday are expected to be the heaviest air travel days, according the John Wayne Airport officials.

Traffic will be a bit congested at the airport because of construction just south of Terminal B. A map of the impacted area is available at ocair.com.”

Costa Mesa DUI Checkpoint set for June 2, 2009

Orange County Sheriff’s Department Plans Sobriety Checkpoints and DUI Saturation Patrols.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department and their contract city partners will be combining resources and sending out a unified message this Memorial Day weekend to holiday travelers, college graduates and communities enjoying local festivities that drunk driving won’t be tolerated. If you drive drunk, we will be looking for you. If you’re over the limit, you will be arrested.

In addition to a DUI checkpoint in Costa Mesa for Friday, May 22nd, the “Avoid The 10″ DUI Task Force will be staffing a DUI checkpoint in Lake Forest this weekend and deploying additional local DUI Saturation Patrols county-wide targeting those who still don’t heed the message to designate a sober driver before the celebrations begin. Funding for the Avoid Campaign is through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

From 2006 to 2007, California witnessed a big decline in the number of people killed in alcohol involved deaths from 1597 to 1489 dead. Last Month, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported a significant decline in traffic deaths in California; traffic safety experts are hopeful to report a decline in alcohol impaired deaths for 2008 within several month (NTHSA Statistical data won’t be available for several months) “Police, Sheriff and CHP Officers are doing more with less to remove drunk drivers from California’s streets and highways,” said Chris Murphy, Director of the California Office of Traffic Safety. “Law enforcement everywhere is asking for the community’s help; if you see a Drunk Driver – Call 9-1-1.”

The enforcement campaign begins Friday night with a DUI/Drivers License Checkpoint in the City of Lake Forest. Local DUI Saturation Patrols will be out on Saturday night and Sunday night in the Cities of Mission Viejo, Rancho Santa Margarita, Lake Forest, Laguna Hills, Laguna Woods, Aliso Viejo, Laguna Niguel, Dana Point, San Juan Capistrano & San Clemente.

Additional DUI crackdowns are planned for the Independence Day weekend and during the National Summer DUI Mobilization effort Mid-August through Labor Day weekend.

Costa Mesa DUI Checkpoint set for June 2, 2009

The Costa Mesa Police Department have announced another DUI checkpoint – this one for Friday, May 22, 2009.  The checkpoint will be at Northbound Harbor Boulevard at Fair Drive.  The hours of the checkpoint will be from 8:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.

Costa Mesa Police, due to political pressure from MADD, keeps on putting up expensive DUI checkpoints, even though they are not as effective as DUI patrols (and considerably add to traffics and related inconveniences).  The last DUI checkpoint put on by Costa Mesa PD failed to even net one arrest during the entire checkpoint.

If you have any questions about the legality of DUI checkpoints in Orange County (or anywhere else), or have questions for an Orange County DUI Lawyer, contact me anytime at 714-568-1560.

Another Buffalo Bill in trouble with the law … this time it’s one of the greatest players of all time.

NFL Hall of Famer Bruce Smith was arrested on DUI charges in Virginia Beach this morning after cops say the former defensive superstar was speeding around 1:42 am.

According to celebrity gossip wire Associated Press, a police spokesman says Smith was also charged with refusing to take a breathalyzer test at the scene.

Smith– football’s all time leading sack leader — was released a few hours later after posting bond.

Smith was arrested for DUI twice before — but the case #1 was dismissed and in case #2, Bruce was acquitted.

Costa Mesa DUI Checkpoint set for June 2, 2009

When I appeared on a case for a client in Riverside County, I was handed by the DA a packet of information regarding their forensic toxicologist and a failure to disclose a child pornography/molestation case he was involved in that was lied about on County job applications.

According to the Los Angeles Daily Journal, thousands of cases (including DUI / Drunk Driving cases) in San Diego, Riverside and San Bernardino counties may be impacted by a forensic alcohol analyst who was working for a private laboratory for over two years. The forensic alcohol analyst was fired in February, 2009. Apparently, this forensic alcohol analyst previously was not being truthful hundreds of times while working at a Colorado lab eight years ago. One county judge has ordered the private laboratory who has contracted to provide forensic alcohol analysis with San Deigo, Riverside and San Bernardino counties to provide a detailed list of thousands of cases the fired forensic alcohol analyst worked on while he was employed there. In addition, at least two county prosecutors offices have and are still compiling information on cases the fired forensic alcohol analyst was involved with.
