Orange County DUI Checkpoints for New Year’s Eve

Friday, December 31st, 2010

Our Orange County DUI lawyers have learned that the South Pasadena Police Department will send several additional patrol vehicles to the major thoroughfares — including Fair Oaks Avenue, Monterey Road, Mission Street, Huntington Drive and Orange Grove Avenue — so officers can be on the lookout for drunk drivers from 8 p.m. until 2 a.m. tonight.

While the Police Department had originally scheduled a DUI checkpoint near the War Memorial Building, they changed plans due to the rain.

South Pasadena will use half of an approximately $6,800 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety to cover officer overtime for tonight’s extra patrol. This weekend’s drunk-driving patrol is part of a nationwide effort by law enforcement and the Avoid DUI Task Force Campaign to crack down on drivers who are under the influence of alcohol. The next DUI checkpoint is scheduled for Labor Day weekend.

South Pasadena Police Sgt. Robert Bartl said most DUI arrests occur along the major thoroughfares, and police sometimes arrest up to five drunk drivers in one weekend.

According to South Pasadena Police, nearly one-fourth of young males admitted to riding in a vehicle with a driver who has had too much to drink within the past year.  If you have questions for our Newport Beach DUI Lawyers, call us at (949) 682-5316.

Orange County DUI Checkpoints for New Year’s Eve

Friday, December 31st, 2010

A DUI checkpoint this past Saturday, December 11th,  in the city of Costa Mesa, resulted in seven DUI investigations, two DUI arrests and another unrelated arrest, according to a news release issued by the Police Department.

The operation on Harbor Boulevard south of Victoria Street also resulted in 21 citations and 35 driver’s license investigations, and 10 vehicles were towed.

Of the 806 vehicles that drove through the checkpoint, 733 were screened, the release stated.

A driver also turned in a replica of a semi-automatic pistol, one that is similar to weapons carried by officers, according to the release.

The latest DUI checkpoint is part of a series of recent checkpoints funded by grants from the California Office of Traffic Safety. DUI checkpoints are not nearly as effective as saturation patrols in removing drunk drivers from the streets, (in fact they are not even close!), but are a substantial amount of income to police agencies from the grants, MADD contributions, and impound fees.

Orange County DUI Checkpoints for New Year’s Eve

Friday, December 31st, 2010

Newport Beach Police Department’s Traffic Division will hold a DUI checkpoint from 7:30 p.m. Dec. 16 to 3 a.m. Dec. 17, police have announced. The checkpoint will be on northbound Jamboree Road at Santa Barbara Drive.

The checkpoint will be marked clearly, and officers will select cars to move through the check lanes on a pre-set basis to ensure objectivity and timeliness, according to a police statement. Motorists will be greeted and given an informational brochure on “Driving Under The Influence,” prepared by the Newport Beach Police Department Traffic Division.

Police say that checkpoints don’t necessarily result in increased numbers of arrests

Orange County DUI Checkpoints for New Year’s Eve

Friday, December 31st, 2010

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department has been awarded a new traffic safety grant for
a year-long comprehensive Driving under the Influence Education Program. The additional
education and enforcement measures are the result of a recent $70,293 grant awarded by the
California Office of Traffic Safety for traffic safety efforts in the South Operations region and
the Cities of Stanton and Villa Park.

The special DUI Education and Enforcement grant is to assist in efforts to reduce the number of
persons killed and injured in alcohol and other drug related collisions by focusing on under-age
drinking and young impaired drivers in the community. The education efforts include
facilitating teen peer to peer education efforts, conducting multimedia events at local schools
and using student journalists as part of the High School Media Challenge program to help reach
the 30,000 high school students in the region.

Orange County DUI Checkpoints for New Year’s Eve

Friday, December 31st, 2010

Costa Mesa police are conducting a number of DUI-related operations this month, department officials said.

Police will launch DUI saturation patrols, where additional officers are patrolling and looking solely for drunk drivers, on Dec. 18 and Dec. 31.

On Saturday, authorities will set up a DUI checkpoint on Harbor Boulevard and Victoria Street from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m., followed by another one less than a week later.

On Dec. 17, from 6 to 11 p.m. police will have a checkpoint set up at 17th Street and Raymond Avenue.

The operations come thanks to a state grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.
