Our Los Angeles DUI tipsters have learned that Rick Springfield, the rocker best known for his song “Jessie’s Girl,†is the latest celebrity to be accused of driving under the influence in Southern California. LAist reported that sheriff’s deputies arrested the ’80s star in Malibu on Sunday after he wasseen driving erratically in his little 1963 Corvette on the Pacific Coast Highway.
Authorities found that Springfield had a blood-alcohol level of .10 percent once he was taken into custody, which is above California’s legal limit of .08 percent. Before deputies even made the arrest in Malibu, they noticed that the singer displayed signs of impairment during the failed sobriety tests. Now if only “a woman like that†were able to get him out of the legal trouble associated with a DUI charge. Assuming of course, she’s a lawyer.
The good news for Springfield is that he was released from jail shortly after the May 1 arrest. CBS News reports that the now 61-year-old singer is scheduled to appear in court on July 5, which will be his first court appearance with this case.
According to TMZ, Springfield failed field sobriety tests. His blood alcohol content reportedly was measured at .10, which is .02 over the legal limit. He is due in a courtroom in Malibu for a first appearance on July 5, 2011.
Even a first-time misdemeanor DUI conviction can carry severe penalties. These penalties can include imprisonment, probation, fines, community service, license suspension and attendance to alcohol education classes. While Springfield might not be looking for a professional job at this time, a DUI conviction could affect a person’s ability to get steady employment because a conviction can show on future background checks.

Famous actor Mel Gibson recently had his Los Angeles DUI conviction expunged, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Gibson was pulled over back in July 2006 by a sheriff’s deputy on the Pacific Coast Highway in Los Angeles, Calif.
Gibson was driving his Lexus Sedan over 85 mph. He was given a breathalyzer test and his BAC content was at 0.12 percent – the legal limit is 0.08 percent.
According to CNN, Gibson was charged with a misdemeanor of drunken driving and an open container of alcohol in his vehicle. The open container charge is considered an infraction of the California Vehicle Code.
This was Gibson’s first offense, which is why he was able to expunge his record – or remove the DUI from his record.
He was eligible to expunge it from his record after he completed the terms of his probation. Gibson attended alcohol anonymous meetings, appeared in public service announcements and paid $1,300 in fines.
After the incident, the celebrity Web site TMZ posted Gibson’s arrest report. The report shows that Gibson did not go peacefully with the officer at the time of his arrest. He allegedly had an obscene outburst and tried to flee from the arresting officer, and then threatened the officer several times.
According to CNN, Gibson also made racial slurs, which became very public after his DUI arrest.
He stated, “The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.“ He then continued to ask the deputy if he was Jewish. This one night of drunken rowdiness may be expunged from his record, but not from the public eye.
CNN also reported that Gibson later released a statement after he made the comments: “I want to apologize specifically to everyone in the Jewish community for the vitriolic and harmful words that I said to a law enforcement official the night I was arrested on a DUI charge.â€Â
He continued to state he blurted the comments out in a moment of insanity.
After Gibson’s arrest, people speculated he would get “special†treatment being a famous star, but an independent review board did find the sheriff’s department handled Gibson’s arrest “in accordance with its policies and practices.â€Â

Since we bring all the Orange County DUI information you can handle, here’s an Orange County DUI Checkpoint Location, from our Orange County DUI Lawyers.
The Seal Beach Police Department will be conducting a DUI/Drivers License checkpoint on Saturday, March 13, 2010, from 8pm to 3am on Pacific Coast Highway between Anderson and Seal Beach Blvd. In an effort to reduce the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol involved crashes, DUI checkpoints are conducted to identify offenders and get them off the street, as well as educate the public on the dangers of impaired driving.
All too often, members of our community are senselessly injured or killed on local roadways by impaired drivers. This DUI/Drivers License checkpoint is an effort to reduce those tragedies, as well as insuring drivers have a valid driver’s license. A major component of these checkpoints is to increase awareness of the dangers of impaired driving and to encourage sober designated drivers.
A DUI checkpoint is a proven effective method for achieving this goal. By publicizing these enforcement and education efforts, The Seal Beach Police Department believes motorists can be deterred from drinking and driving.
Traffic volume and weather permitting, all vehicles may be checked and drivers who are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs will be arrested. Our objective is to send a clear message to those who are considering driving a motor vehicle after consuming alcohol and/or drugs – Drunk Driving, Over the Limit, Under Arrest. The public is encouraged to help keep roadways safe by calling 911 if they see a suspected impaired driver.
Funding for this operation is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
