Note: I received the following DUI Checkpoint press release from law enforcement. I present it here for your information:

On Friday evenings 08/21/2009 and 08-28-2009, the San Marcos Sheriff’s Traffic Division, with cooperation from the North County Law Enforcement Traffic Safety Council, will conduct Driving Under the Influence checkpoints at undisclosed locations in the City of San Marcos.

These details are part of the on-going effort by the California Office of Traffic Safety, the City of San Marcos and the Sheriff’s Traffic Division to reduce the number of drunken driving traffic collisions and related incidents during the busy summer months. The checkpoint will be staffed by San Marcos deputies, senior volunteers, and representatives of the North County Law Enforcement Traffic Safety Council.

MISSION: The purpose of the operation is to raise awareness, identify and arrest drunk drivers, and allow for a safer driving environment within the City of San Marcos. There will also be enforcement of other California Vehicle Codes relating to seat belt violations along with any other alcohol related or law violations.

The Palm Desert Police Department, in its continued dedication to public safety, will be conducting a Driving While Intoxicated / Driver’s License Checkpoint on Saturday May 30TH , from 8:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. This checkpoint is part of the ongoing public safety awareness effort being made by the City of Palm Desert. The focus of the checkpoint will be to reduce driving while intoxicated and injury collisions, while removing drunk drivers from the roadway, along with apprehending those driving without a valid license.

Funding for this operation is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The grant provides funding to staff checkpoints at various times throughout the year to reduce drunk driving and apprehend drivers with suspended and/or revoked licenses.

The Palm Desert Police Traffic Team consists of two Sergeants, along with the Motorcycle Enforcement Unit and our Traffic Collision Investigation Officers. Members of the Traffic Team investigate traffic collisions, enforce traffic laws, develop traffic flow plans and assist with special events. Our goal is to provide better public safety through Evaluation, Education and Enforcement. The Santa Monica Police Department will be conducting a traffic safety DUI enforcement saturation patrol on March 17, 2009. Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Additional police resources will be present to contact impaired drivers on the roadways of Santa Monica in an attempt to make the St Patrick’s Day celebration a safe one, with no alcohol-related traffic collision injuries or fatalities.
