DUI Checkpoint in Orange County nets 2 DUI arrests

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

From the Daily Pilot:

“A weekend DUI checkpoint in Costa Mesa netted several suspects, including arrests for drugs and driving under the influence, police said.

During the Saturday checkpoint on Newport Boulevard at Flower Street, 2,400 vehicles passed through the checkpoint with more than 460 being stopped by officers. Of those, police pulled 25 aside for closer scrutiny.

Police ended up arresting two people on suspicion of driving under the influence, one person for possession of marijuana, three for driving with a suspended or revoked driver’s license, and one for not having a license. More than a dozen others were given tickets for various violations, police said.

The checkpoint is one of several police will conduct in the coming months, thanks to a grant from the state’s Office of Traffic Safety. Police are scheduled to conduct another checkpoint in December, officials said.”

0.0083 percent DUI arrests?  That’s shameful, Costa Mesa Police Department.

As I have mentioned in several previous posts, DUI checkpoints are a horribly inefficient way of protecting the public safety interest and keeping drunk drivers off the road.  Hundreds of drunk drivers were out on the roads and officers were kept busy running the checkpoint to catch two of them, instead of looking for cues of impaired driving.

DUI Checkpoint in Orange County nets 2 DUI arrests

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

The Costa Mesa Police Department today announced a DUI checkpoint here in Orange County, scheduled for November 22, 2008.  The Daily Pilot put up a story about the checkpoint in their newspaper also.

Here are the details:

Costa Mesa police will conduct a DUI and driver’s license checkpoint Saturday on Newport Boulevard.

From 8 p.m. to 2 a.m., police will have a checkpoint for northbound traffic on Newport Boulevard and Flower Street, police said.

So far this year, Costa Mesa police have arrested more than any other agency in Orange County — more than 830 suspected drunken drivers.  (Last year, Costa Mesa Police alone were responsible for over 2/3 of all Orange County DUI Arrests).  Showing how political this whole process is, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), will have volunteers, and a crashed car trailer on hand to give drivers a visual reminder of the dangers of driving drunk.

Funding for the checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.  As I have mentioned in other posts, DUI checkpoints are not nearly as effective as patrol cars looking for specific driving patterns from motorists.  However, they get funding, and they give MADD volunteers something to do, and to raise money for.

DUI Checkpoint in Orange County nets 2 DUI arrests

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

The Daily Pilot reports the results from the Costa Mesa DUI checkpoint on Thursday, September 4, 2008.

“Of 1,600 cars that passed through a Costa Mesa Police Department sobriety checkpoint this week, none were cited for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to Sgt. Robert Sharpnack.

A total of 326 cars were stopped at 17th Street and Westminster venue Thursday, and although no drivers were found to be inebriated, a few were cited for other miscellaneous violations.

Two drove without a license, two drove with suspended licenses and 21 had vehicle code violations, Sharpnack said.

Four cars were impounded.

During the checkpoint, an increased number of police patrolled the surrounding streets to make sure nobody ducked the sobriety test, according to Sharpnack.”

As I’ve mentioned before, DUI checkpoints are a poor way to get drunk driver’s off the streets.  Roving patrols, which most police agencies use, have a much higher conviction rate.  But, in typical political fashion, MADD prefers DUI checkpoints, which they can use to raise awareness, funding, and keep volunteers busy.

DUI Checkpoint in Orange County nets 2 DUI arrests

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

From the Daily Pilot:

Costa Mesa police will have a DUI checkpoint from 6 p.m. to midnight Thursday, looking for drivers under the influence and people driving without a valid license.

The checkpoint is scheduled to be at eastbound 17th Street and Westminster Avenue.

Some interesting facts:  2/3 of all the DUI arrests in Orange County occur from the Costa Mesa Police Department.  Checkpoints continue to be popular, in a way to satisfy the goals of MADD and to show that they are doing something, but they are the worst way to catch DUI offenders – roving patrols with trained officers are much better.

DUI Checkpoints, if improperly designed, or operated, create defenses that may lead to the dismissal of DUIs at the checkpoint.  If you have questions about a Costa Mesa DUI, contact me at 714-568-1560.
