Our Newport Beach DUI Lawyers have learned taht Newport Beach Police Department traffic officers will conduct a sobriety checkpoint from 6 p.m. tonight until 1 a.m. Thursday.

The checkpoint will be northbound Newport Boulevard at Finley Avenue, a location selected based upon its proximity to bars and restaurants, according to a police statement. “Site determination was also based upon roadway configuration, sight distances, traffic volume, lighting, and motorist safety, the statement said.

The checkpoint will be clearly marked, police said, and vehicles will be selected to move through the check lanes on a pre-set basis to ensure objectivity and timeliness. “Motorists will be greeted and given an informational brochure on Driving Under The Influence, prepared by the Newport Beach Police Department Traffic Division, the statement said.

Our Newport Beach DUI lawyers have learned that DUI checkpoints on Wednesday and Thursday nights resulted in five arrests, 36 citations issued and 20 vehicles towed, according to a news release from the Costa Mesa Police Department.

A paraplegic driver was among the drivers arrested for suspected DUI Wednesday, and was spotted just before entering the checkpoint, the statement said.

The second checkpoint, on Thursday night, led to the arrest of a 78-year-old motorist, whose driving privileges had expired. The officer recognized the elderly woman from a checkpoint held five months ago in the same area, where the driver had been stopped for driving without a license.

In a separate incident, an officer on a motorcycle came across an injury hit and run traffic collision at the intersection of Anton Boulevard and Avenue of the Arts, and was able to apprehend the suspect, according to the release.

The checkpoints took place in the 2300 block of Placentia Avenue on Wednesday, and at the intersection of Sunflower Avenue and Anton Boulevard Thursday. The locations were selected because DUI-related fatalities had occurred there before.

Central Bureau Sobriety Checkpoint

Why:The purpose of the sobriety checkpoint is to reduce the number of traffic collisions involving intoxicated drivers and hit and run collisions. In 2010, residents residing in the Northeast Area have endured 32 driving under the influence-related and 280 hit and run traffic collisions. The checkpoint will educate the community to use designated drivers and not drink and drive. Our message is simple: If we catch you drunk, you will be arrested.

It is the Los Angeles Police Department’s goal to continue providing public awareness on the dangers of drinking and driving, and the laws concerning driving without a valid driver’s license. Motorists approaching a checkpoint will observe traffic signs,information and police officers advising that a checkpoint is ahead. Once diverted into a lane, each motorist will be detained momentarily while an officer explains the purpose of the checkpoint.

The Costa Mesa Police Department will conduct a sobriety and driver’s license checkpoint on Monday, Marc 1 st , from 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., on Harbor Boulevard at Fair Drive.  Officers will  screen  drivers  passing  through  the  checkpoint  for  sobriety  and  for  a  valid  driver’s  license.  Drivers found to be under the influence of alcohol or other drugs will be arrested, and unlicensed
drivers may be cited and have their cars towed.

DUI Checkpoints are not an effective way to accomplish the goal of public safety, but they are a cash cow for cops and the city, which needs the funding.  The City makes most of their money from impounding vehicles, which gets paid even if the person is later found innocent, and the Federal Government chips in substantial funding for DUI Checkpoints.  MADD also provides funding and volunteers.

The Moreno Valley Police Department will conduct a sobriety and driver’s license checkpoint on Thursday January 28, from 6:00 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., in the City of Moreno Valley. Officers will screen drivers passing through the checkpoint for sobriety and for a valid driver’s license. Drivers found to be under the influence of alcohol or other drugs will be arrested, and unlicensed drivers may be cited and have their cars towed.

“DUI arrests can be embarrassing and expensive, but they’re easy to prevent,” said Police Chief John Anderson. “If you’re drinking, hand your keys over to a designated sober driver, or call a taxi or sober friend for a ride home. Don’t risk an arrest —or worse, a serious injury or even death.”

The purpose of the sobriety checkpoint is to serve as a reminder to use designated drivers and not drink and drive.

It is the Moreno Valley Police Department’s goal to continue providing public awareness on the dangers of drinking and driving, and the laws concerning driving without a driver’s license. The Lake Elsinore Police Department will be conducting a DUI / Driver’s License checkpoint on Saturday, January 30th. In an effort to reduce the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol involved crashes, DUI checkpoints are conducted to identify offenders and get them off the street, as well as educate the public on the dangers of impaired driving.

All too often, members of our community are senselessly injured or killed on local roadways by impaired drivers. This DUI / Driver’s License checkpoint is an effort to reduce those tragedies, as well as ensuring drivers have a valid driver’s license. The checkpoint will educate the community to use designated drivers and not drink and drive. Our message is simple: If we catch you drunk, you will be arrested.

It is the Los Angeles Police Department’s goal to continue providing public awareness on the dangers of drinking and driving, and the laws concerning driving without a valid driver’s license. Motorists approaching a checkpoint will observe traffic signs, information and police officers advising that a checkpoint is ahead. Once diverted into a lane, each motorist will be detained momentarily while an officer explains the purpose of the checkpoint.

San Bernardino Police Department Targets Impaired Drivers with Checkpoint

Traffic Sgt B. Birnbuam sent a press release to us, as Orange County DUI Lawyers, explaining that the San Bernardino Police Department will be conducting a DUI checkpoint on Saturday, December 12, 2009, from 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m., in the area of Highland Avenue and Guthrie Street. DUI checkpoints are conducted to identify offenders and get them off the street, as well as educate the public on the dangers of impaired driving.

A DUI/Drivers License checkpoint is an effort to arrest persons suspected of DUI, as well as insuring drivers have a valid driver’s license. A major component of these checkpoints is to increase awareness of the dangers of impaired driving and to encourage sober designated drivers.

A DUI checkpoint is not a proven effective method for achieving this goal, with a conviction rate lower than 1% based on motorists stopped. However police agencies have substantial political pressure, from groups like MADD, and obtain a large amount of federal and state funding to run such checkpoints, which are then staffed by MADD volunteers, the San Bernardino Police Department believes motorists can be deterred from drinking and driving.

Traffic volume and weather permitting, all vehicles may be checked and drivers who are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs will be arrested.
