An Orange County DUI checkpoint looking for drunk drivers in Costa Mesa resulted in three arrests this weekend, police said.
The Costa Mesa Police Department set up a checkpoint Friday at the intersection of Baker and Bear streets, according to a department press release.
The checkpoint screened 318 vehicles. Three people were arrested on suspicion of DUI, nine citations were issued and six vehicles were impounded.
“This checkpoint was one of many that have been or will be conducted throughout the year in the city of Costa Mesa,” Sgt. David Makiyama, a police spokesman, said in a statement. “The goal of the DUI checkpoint was removing impaired drivers and to bring awareness to the public of the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.”
As mentioned, DUI Sobriety Checkpoints are becoming more about the money than public safety. I’ve seen this happen with Los Angeles DUI and Orange County DUI cases, and I can say that with some certainty as one of the top Orange County DUI Lawyers in the area.

The following is a press release sent to our Orange County DUI Lawyers regarding Orange County DUI Checkpoint Locations in Costa Mesa for February, 2010.
Release Date: February 17, 2010
PIO: Lieutenant Bryan Glass
714.754.5603
Sergeant Phil Myers
714.754.5074
Synopsis:
Drunk driving is one of America’s deadliest crimes. In California last year 1,029 people died in crashes
involving a driver or motorcycle rider with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher. That is
why the Costa Mesa Police Department announced today they will be holding a DUI/Driver’s License
checkpoint on Friday, February 19 th , from 8:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m., on Baker Street at Bear Street.
“Make no mistake. Our message is simple. No matter what you drive—a passenger car, pickup, sport
utility vehicle or motorcycle—if we catch you driving impaired, we will arrest you. No exceptions. No
excuses,” said Sergeant Makiyama. “We will be talking to drivers, making sure they are not impaired,
arresting those who are, and getting the word out that impaired driving and driving without a proper
license is not acceptable in Costa Mesa.
The Costa Mesa Police Department advises that by following these easy steps, a driver can enjoy a safe
and festive evening without jeopardizing their life and the lives of the others who may be on the road.
Plan a safe way home before the festivities begin;
Before drinking, designate a sober driver and give that person your keys;
If you’re impaired, use a taxi, call a sober friend or family member, or use public
transportation so you are sure to get home safely;
If you happen to see a drunk driver on the road, don’t hesitate to call 911.
Driving impaired is simply not worth the risk. The consequences are serious and real. Not only do you risk
killing yourself or someone else, but the trauma and financial costs of a crash or an arrest for driving while
impaired can be significant. Violators face jail time, the loss of their driver’s license, higher insurance
rates, and dozens of other unanticipated expenses.
Funding for this checkpoint comes from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National
Highway Transportation Safety Administration.
Supervisor Writing / Approving Release: David Makiyama, Sergeant

SPECIAL DUI ENFORCEMENT CRACKDOWN Friday February 05, 2010 in Lake Elsinore
Officers from the Lake Elsinore Police Department’s Traffic Enforcement Team will be deploying officers on a special saturation patrol this week to crack down on drunk driving in the city.
“If you drive drunk, the Lake Elsinore Police Department will be looking for you. The Department’s message is very simple. Over the limit, under arrest.
Lake Elsinore Police will be conducting this “Zero Tolerance” DUI Saturation Patrol on Friday, February 5th, targeting those who still don’t heed the message to designate a sober driver before their celebrations begin. Funding for the patrol is through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Over the course of the past two years, DUI collisions have claimed nine lives and seriously injured thirteen of our friends and neighbors in the City of Lake Elsinore.
Since 2005, the number of alcohol-involved fatalities has been dropping, thanks to efforts like this. But law enforcement and the public must continue to work toward zero deaths.
“Law enforcement officers are doing more to remove drunk drivers from California’s streets and highways thanks to our DUI traffic safety funding,” said Christopher J. Murphy, Director of the California Office of Traffic Safety. “But everyone can help make their communities safer. If you see a Drunk Driver – Call 9-1-1.”
The above press release was sent to our Riverside DUI Lawyers to help spread the word.

The Redlands Police Department will conduct a sobriety and driver’s license checkpoint from 10 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, through 3 a.m. Sunday, in the northbound lane of Church Street between Brockton and Lugonia avenues.
The Redlands Police Department conducts DUI checkpoints to identify offenders and get them off the street, as well as to educate the public on the dangers of impaired driving. Driver’s licenses will also be checked at the checkpoint.
A major component of these checkpoints is to increase awareness of the dangers of impaired driving and to encourage sober designated drivers. A DUI checkpoint not is a proven effective method for achieving this goal, but the federal government, and MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) gives substantial funds and volunteer time towards DUI checkpoints.

Another one of the Orange County DUI Checkpoint Locations for this holiday season has been revealed, this time in Seal Beach, and not on New Year’s Eve:
Beginning this Friday (01/01/2010) at 8:00pm, Seal Beach Police Department will be conducting a sobriety and drivers license checkpoint on Friday, January 1, 2010, in the south end of the city.
Orange County DUI arrests were headed down this year, until the State approved an all out 300 checkpoint holiday sweep, to bring stats up, for law enforcement funding. Looks like this might be the only up year in a 10 year decline in all crimes, especially DUI.
Brought to you by the Orange County DUI Lawyers of Robert Miller and Associates.

Our Orange County DUI Lawyers found a press release by the Irvine Police Department regarding their a DUI/sobriety checkpoint during the evening hours on Saturday December 19, 2009. The checkpoint was located at Irvine Center Drive and Hubble in the City of Irvine. As part of the California Holiday DUI Crackdown Campaign, the purpose of the checkpoint was to deter impaired driving and hold accountable those driving under the influence.
Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) helped sponsor and provide support to these checkpoints. According to MADD, in one survey, 79% of the public approved of sobriety checkpoints.
Funding for the special enforcement campaign, December 16, 2009 through January 3, 2010 came from a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
This checkpoint was staffed by sworn officers and professional staff from the Irvine Police Department, and by MADD volunteers.
Look at these numbers:
Vehicles Stopped Sobriety Tests DUI Arrests Citations Issued Vehicles Towed
347 4 ZERO (0) 14 5
347 vehicles and drivers (not to mention other passengers) inconvenienced, traffic delayed, for zero arrests? For 14 traffic tickets to be issued? As I’ve said so many times, DUI checkpoints are a waste of time, and aren’t even as effective as the more useful saturation patrols. But still, based upon MADD pressure and federal money, they persist.
I often get the argument, “but Robert, if even one drunk driver is taken off the road…”, an argument that has its own logical fallacy, but in this case, as with many others, what if not even one drunk driver is taken off the road?

Our law firm of Orange County DUI Attorneys received notification via press release that the Garden Grove Police Department conducted a DUI/Drivers License Checkpoint on November 21, 2009, as part of The City of Garden Grove’s commitment to public safety. This checkpoint was one of many that have been or will be conducted throughout the year in the City of Garden Grove. The location of Saturday’s checkpoint was on 13752 Harbor Blvd. The goal of the DUI Checkpoint was removing impaired drivers and to bring awareness to the public of the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
During the checkpoint one of the vehicles being screened was sent into the secondary screening location, due to the driver not having a driver’s license in his possession. When officers contacted him, a want/warrant check was completed, revealing that his driver’s license was suspended. It was also discovered that he was an outstanding parolee who was being sought by his parole officer. He was taken into custody without an incident.
601 Vehicles Screened
6 DUI Suspects Arrested
1 Illegal Drug Suspects Arrested
46 Citations issued
6 Vehicles Impounded for 30 day
42 Unlicensed and Suspended Drivers Sent to Court
2 Arrested on other Criminal Charges
The checkpoint was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Note: The following DUI checkpoint press release was sent to our law firm, (we’re known for being the best Orange County DUI Lawyers around), and we present it for your information, and your help in planning your holiday weekend and driving plans. If you have questions about this out of town DUI checkpoint, contact us anytime at (714) 568-1560.
If you plan to make merry this holiday season by hoisting a few, be forewarned: Fullerton police are out there looking for you.
Fullerton police will conduct a sobriety checkpoint Saturday, Dec., 19, to watch for intoxicated drivers. The checkpoint which will be held from 8 p.m.-2 a.m. The location is not being announced, but will be on a major thoroughfare. (Typically near Commonwealth and Harbor in the Downtown Fullerton area in the city, based upon past DUI checkpoints).
Motorists passing through the Fullerton checkpoint will also receive safe driving literature donated by Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD), as part of the political connection between DUI law enforcement and MADD.
The Fullerton checkpoint will be the first of 300 DUI checkpoints planned by law enforcement agencies throughout the state as part of an 18-day “Holiday DUI Crackdown Campaign” funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Fullerton’s officers “will be adopting a zero tolerance approach to DUI cases,” said Sgt. Tak Kim, who is coordinating the event for the Police Department. “If you’re over the legal limit, you’re going to jail.”
Kim said the intent of the program “is not to spoil the holidays for anyone. Rather, our single goal is to try to make sure everyone has a great holiday by keeping intoxicated motorists off the streets where they can’t hurt themselves or innocent bystanders.”
The statewide Holiday DUI Crackdown Campaign will run Dec. 19 through Jan. 3, as I have reported in another posting. DUIs have dropped in the past few years, which is urging law enforcement to show that they are needed to keep streets safe (and keep their jobs).
Further information about the DUI enforcement program may be obtained by calling the Traffic Bureau of the Fullerton Police Department at (714) 738-5313.
