Our Newport Beach DUI Lawyers have been enjoying St. Patrick’s Day, but we need to warn you of a few checkpoints and saturation patrols this evening and this weekend.

First, in Irvine, The Irvine Police Department will deploy a DUI/Drivers License Checkpoint on Thursday, March 17, 2010 at Jamboree Road and Alton Parkway, in the City of Irvine as part of their ongoing campaign to spend state funds and utilize MADD volunteers to have DUI checkpoints in the city.  Alcohol-impaired fatalities have declined substantially in recent years – down 26 percent since 2006 when the Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) and law enforcement began placing increased emphasis on funding toward sobriety checkpoints.  Driving under the influence related deaths declined by 7.6 percent in California between 2008 and 2009 alone.  However, it’s not due to checkpoints, which are money makers for the police departments.  The unfunded DUI saturation patrols are the current technology that has the highest rates of apprehending persons drunk driving.  The checkpoint will be clearly marked and vehicles will be selected to be checked on a pre-set basis to ensure objectivity.  Motorists will be greeted and given an informational brochure on impaired driving, courtesy of the political action group MADD.  Driver’s licenses will be checked, and trained officers will direct impaired drivers to a secondary check area for further evaluation.  Most motorists will experience little delay, if any at all.

In Long Beach, The Long Beach Police Department will be conducting a citywide DUI Saturation Patrol on Saturday, March 19, 2011, from 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m., and throughout Orange County tonight, the coordinated efforts of “Avoid the 38″, will have saturation patrols looking for people driving drunk.

Our Orange County DUI Lawyers have learned from the OC Sheriff’s Department that the 2010/11 Winter Holiday DUI Mobilization crackdown on drinking drivers has ended and resulted in 743 arrests for DUI from 12:01 AM Friday, December 17th, through midnight Sunday January 2, 2011, officers representing Orange County law enforcement agencies arrested 743 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.  In 2009/10, 602 DUI arrests occurred during the same time period with no deaths reported.

Law enforcement officials will be conducting more “Avoid” anti-DUI efforts throughout the county and region during Super Bowl Sunday and then again for local St Patrick’s Day festivities.

Our Newport Beach DUI Lawyers have learned that Newport Beach police will be ramping up DUI enforcement tonight as many people celebrating St. Patrick’s Day will have a little Irish spirit — and spirits — in them.

Three squad cars, each with two officers, will patrol the Balboa Peninsula and the rest of the city to find potential drunk drivers, police said. The six officers will complement regular police in the city.

Police will also start “Operation Trapdoor,” in which two pairs of plain-clothes officers will be spending time in peninsula bars to look for law violations.

Sgt. Steve Burdette said the undercover officers from the vice and Alcohol Beverage Control units will search for people trying to get into bars with fake identification or who are breaking other laws.

Orange County DUI Checkpoints – St. Patrick’s Day

Seal of Orange County, California

Orange County police agencies began a special 17-day DUI enforcement period on Dec. 18 that will last until Jan. 3 to crack down on drunken driving.

The operation is part of a statewide effort to enforce laws pertaining to motorists driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs made possible by AVOID — A Multi-Agency DUI Task Force.

On the first weekend of enforcement, Dec. 18 through Dec. 20, there were a total of 31 DUI arrests in Orange County.

During the holiday enforcement period, Orange County law enforcement officers will use sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols throughout the county to make the streets safer for drivers.

Other increased enforcement periods include mid-August through Labor Day weekend, Memorial Day weekend, Independence Day weekend, Halloween, Super Bowl Sunday, St. Patrick’s Day and Cinco de Mayo.

Law enforcement officers suggest that all community members can help by keeping an eye out for drunken drivers. Signs to look for in a suspected drunken driver include car swerving, driving too fast or slow, braking for no reason, driving with no headlights at night, or signaling one way and turning the other. If you feel you may have witnessed someone driving drunk, call 9-1-1.

Additional information about the Avoid Program and operational plans from around the region can be found at www.californiaavoid.org.
