It’s nice to see that newspaper reporters are waking up to what I’ve been saying for years. DUI Checkpoints, for a variety of reasons, are the worst way to get alleged drunk drivers off the streets. They cost a fortune in taxpayer money, and they take up the time of valuable officers, that can be observing actual driving, which is more likely to lead in DUI arrests.

A recent article in the Daily Pilot newspaper said this:

Checkpoints generally do not lead to many DUI arrests but serve more as a reminder to drivers about the dangers of drinking and driving, and that police are seeking those breaking the law. The extra costs associated with the checkpoint are funded through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.

A DUI checkpoint March 24 netted police more than two dozen tickets but no DUI arrests. Police will issue tickets for everything at a checkpoint ranging from seat-belt violations to not driving with a valid driver’s license or any license at all.

That’s one expensive way to get traffic ticket citations, and inconvenience hundreds, in many cases thousands, of law abiding drivers and citizens. It’s a huge waste of money, but it’s all political, since it gives MADD funding and something to do.
