Our Newport Beach DUI lawyers have learned that DUI checkpoints on Wednesday and Thursday nights resulted in five arrests, 36 citations issued and 20 vehicles towed, according to a news release from the Costa Mesa Police Department.
A paraplegic driver was among the drivers arrested for suspected DUI Wednesday, and was spotted just before entering the checkpoint, the statement said.
The second checkpoint, on Thursday night, led to the arrest of a 78-year-old motorist, whose driving privileges had expired. The officer recognized the elderly woman from a checkpoint held five months ago in the same area, where the driver had been stopped for driving without a license.
In a separate incident, an officer on a motorcycle came across an injury hit and run traffic collision at the intersection of Anton Boulevard and Avenue of the Arts, and was able to apprehend the suspect, according to the release.
The checkpoints took place in the 2300 block of Placentia Avenue on Wednesday, and at the intersection of Sunflower Avenue and Anton Boulevard Thursday. The locations were selected because DUI-related fatalities had occurred there before.

Our Orange County DUI Lawyers have learned that the Costa Mesa Police Department Traffic Safety Bureau will be conducting DUI/Drivers License checkpoints on Wednesday, April 27 and Thursday, April 28th, 2011 between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m. in the 2300 block of Placentia Avenue and on Sunflower Avenue at Anton Boulevard. DUI checkpoints are a proven enforcement tool effective in reducing the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol involved crashes, as well as being a valuable means for heightening awareness of the dangers of impaired driving.
The checkpoint locations were selected because two lives were lost to DUI collisions at these locations over the past three years. Since January 2008, DUI collisions in Costa Mesa have killed two people and injured 260 more.  Statewide, overall traffic deaths from DUI declined dramatically by 23 percent, from 3,995 in 2007 to 3,081 in 2009. Total traffic fatalities are at their lowest levels in six decades, when the federal government began compiling figures.
Officers will be checking drivers through the checkpoint for signs of alcohol and or drug impairments. Officers will check for proper licensing and will strive to impact motorists only momentarily. If officers suspect that a driver has been drinking or is impaired, they will conduct a field sobriety test. If you fail, expect jail, vehicle storage fees, license suspension, insurance rate increases, along with fines, fees, DUI classes, other expenses that can exceed $10,000.

Our Newport Beach DUI Lawyers have learned that the Traffic Division of the Newport Beach Police Department will be conducting a sobriety/driver’s license checkpoint on Friday, March 11, 2011. The location of the checkpoint will be northbound Dover Drive at 16th Street. The approximate hours of operation will be from 9:00 p.m. until 3:00 a.m.
The checkpoint location was selected based upon its proximity to bars and restaurants and provides a high degree of visibility to the motoring public. Site determination was also based upon roadway configuration, sight distances, traffic volume, lighting, and motorist safety. A primary consideration was also officer safety.
The checkpoint will be clearly marked and vehicles will be selected to move through the check lanes on a pre-set basis to ensure objectivity and timeliness. Motorists will be greeted and given an informational brochure on “Driving Under The Influence,†prepared by the Newport Beach Police Department Traffic Division.

Our Orange County DUI Lawyers have learned from this article in the Daily Pilot http://www.dailypilot.com/news/tn-dpt-1013-grant-20101012,0,3179960.story, that Costa Mesa Police Department have a
Some nuggets: “Through September of 2011, the money will fund police overtime for a dozen DUI checkpoints, 16 saturation patrols, additional police training, 11 special stings and increased traffic enforcement. More than $325,000 of that pays for police overtime, with the rest divvied among training and new equipment, according to the agreement with the Office of Traffic Safety (OTS).
Drunk driving is a big issue in the city every year, with police here regularly making more DUI arrests than in any other Orange County city, and at the same time having among the most alcohol-related traffic collisions.
According to OTS statistics …, Costa Mesa had more alcohol-related crashes than any other city in the state with populations of 100,000 to 250,000. It also had the fifth-most DUI arrests, 710, in 2008.
DUI-related crashes in Costa Mesa have dropped 47% since 2005, police reported.”
Note that the biggest funding is for overtime for Police Officers. No wonder the Police Union is so happy. As a DUI Specialist Orange County, I can tell you that DUI Checkpoints are all about money.

SAN DIEGO – “The Real World: San Francisco†star Puck  real name David Rainey  was arrested on a DUI charge, California Highway Patrol officer Brian Pennings told NBC San Diego, over an accident Friday night that has left him in the hospital.
“(Rainey) was arrested for suspicion of DUI, however, he remains hospitalized due to his medical condition,†Pennings told the site.
According to Pennings, the former reality star will also be facing charges of child endangerment and driving without a license.
NBC San Diego reported that the Rainey, 41, and his 8-year-old son, Bogart, were severely injured in an auto accident on Friday that left the car upside down in a stream bed after it rolled down an embankment.
According to TMZ, sources close to Rainey’s family said he and Bogart were traveling on California’s Route 79 on Friday for a fishing trip when Puck swerved to avoid hitting a deer and lost control of the car.
However, Pennings did not mention an animal, telling NBC San Diego that Rainey lost control of his vehicle due to a curve in the road on Route 79.
“Due to his level of intoxication, he was unable to negotiate a curve in the roadway,†Pennings said.
TMZ further reported that after being transported to the hospital, doctors discovered that Rainey suffered broken bones in both feet, his right hand and his neck, He also reportedly fractured his clavicle and sternum.
Rainey’s son reportedly suffered damage to his liver and bruised several internal organs in the accident.
The reality star is reportedly expected to remain hospitalized for another week.

As Orange County DUI Lawyers, we get lots of press releases, and this one I was tempted to write off as an April Fool’s Joke. Federal funds to the police department for snarling up traffic with a fake DUI accident? Here’s the release sent to us:
On Thursday April 1 and Friday April 2, 2010, the Fountain Valley Police Department and Fountain Valley High School will present the “Every Fifteen Minutes†program to the junior and senior classes. This two-day program focuses on personal safety, drinking and driving and the potential consequences of poor decision-making. The program name was derived from statistics which show that approximately every 15 minutes someone in the United States dies or is seriously injured in an alcohol related traffic accident. The goal of the program is to reduce alcohol related traffic collisions in our community. The “Every 15 Minutes†program is presented prior to spring break, prom and graduation ceremonies, which makes it a timely event.
On Thursday, April 1st at 10:15 a.m., a fatal alcohol related traffic accident will be re-enacted. This will take place at Bushard and El Camino streets in front of Fountain Valley High School. The Fountain Valley Police and Fire Departments, Orange County Coroner’s office, C.A.R.E. Ambulance and other agencies will participate in the re-enactment. The injured parties will be transported to a local hospital and the fatality will be transported to the Coroner’s Office. The person responsible for the accident will be arrested and booked at the Fountain Valley Police Department.
Prior to the traffic accident re-enactment, 27 students will be removed from classes by the Grim Reaper at 15-minute intervals. The Grim Reaper will appear in classrooms around the campus and a Police Officer and a Police Chaplain will read the mock obituaries for the ‘living dead’. As this occurs on campus Police Officers and a Police Chaplain will deliver death notifications to the parents of the victims. Although the parents know that this is a staged event the emotional impact of the notifications has proved to be overwhelming to those involved.
On Friday, April 2nd at 9:15 a.m. a school assembly will take place. The entire junior and senior class will be involved. Gary Zelesky, a nationally known motivational speaker will address the students. Police Chief Paul A. Sorrell will also be present. There will be a video presentation of the events surrounding the traffic accident from the day prior. The ‘living dead’, as the accident victims are referred to, will be reunited with their families and several of them will speak at the assembly. This has proven to be another very emotionally charged part of the program.
Due to street closures in the area of this event it is recommended that the press arrive 30 minutes prior to the beginning of the program.
Sergeant Eric Orahood
(714) 593-4472
*Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
